Micro-Blogging: Time-saving tip.
September 28th, 2008 by Ian O'Donnell
I have no idea how many of you do or do-not use Micro-Blogging or Social Networking tools such as Twitter, Jaiku and Facebook to begin with but that is another story for another day. This tip is something I have been trying to do for a long time (Read: Thinking about doing) and this evening I finally put finger to key and got it sorted and was pleasantly surprised at how simple it was.
Ok back to my main point, anyone who is a big micro-blogger and many others besides I am sure, have used tinyURL or a similar service to shorten an ugly URL into a publicly presentable one e.g. the search results for “just an example please”:
and after being ‘tinyurled’, http://tinyurl.com/43tkhw
My main issue was it took so long to go to tinyurl.com and paste everything and copy it back, well it was fast but wasted time nonetheless. So I found this first addon for Firefox
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/126
When on a page that you want the link for, simply right click, hit “Make tinyURL” and you will have it in your clipboard. Huzzah!
I hear you sigh and say, “oh please that it so 2007″, well I have just discovered it and will hopefully point someone else in the right direction too. Another tip coming soon but more Jaiku-specific.

Someone should build a url.ie extension. I would switch to that in a second.

Or build your own. I know I have the perl code around here somewhere…

Twitter does it on its own, and seems to do it pretty quickly, and thus far, it’s the only place I can think of where I’d even need it.

@Mitch: Fair point but I guess we all use the web differently. For me i use a lot of services where this is a handy feature like Jaiku and other Microblogging tools, obviously not on the Twitter though but still.
